👉 Learn how to write a quadratic equation from standard form to vertex form by completing the square. A quadratic equation is an equation whose highest exponent in the variable(s) is 2. It is of the form f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c.
Given a quadratic equation, we write the equation using completing the square by first making sure that the coefficient of the squared variable is 1, if not so, we divide through the terms by the coefficient of the squared variable. Next, we add to the left hand side of the constant term, the square of half the coefficient of the linear term, and subtract same from the constant term. The resulting equation is of the form f(x) = (x + a)^2 + b, where d is half the coefficient of the linear term and b is the difference between the constant term and the square of half the coefficient of the constant term.
