Abstract: La guerra di Spagna (1936-1939) è stato uno degli eventi più drammatici della storia di questo secolo.
Attraverso le immagini di repertorio tratte dagli splendidi film-documentari di registi quali Buñuel, Ivens, Sûb, il film affronta la storia di una guerra il cui significato ha superato i confini della Spagna: ha rappresentato il primo confronto diretto nella lotta mondiale tra fascismo e antifascismo e il preludio della seconda guerra mondiale. Ripercorrendo la storia della guerra civile, dalla vittoria del Fronte popolare alla sconfitta della Repubblica nel 1939, il film mostra alcuni dei momenti più drammatici della guerra: l'assedio di Madrid; la battaglia dell'Ebro, l.intervento militare fascista e nazista. I documenti raccolti nel film danno anche il senso dell'impegno internazionalista e democratico che ha portato migliaia di volontari da tutto il mondo a combattere per la libertà della Spagna.

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was one of the most dramatic events in the history of this century. Through archive images taken from the beautiful documentary films by directors such as Buñuel, Ivens, SUB, the film deals with the story of a war whose meaning has exceeded the boundaries of Spain was the first direct comparison in the worldwide struggle between fascism and anti-fascism and the prelude to the second World war. Tracing the history of the civil war, the victory of the Popular Front to the defeat of the Republic in 1939, the film shows some of the most dramatic moments of the war: the siege of Madrid; the Battle of the Ebro, fascist and nazist military intervention. Documents gathered in the film also give the sense of the internationalist and democratic commitment that has brought thousands of volunteers from around the world to fight for the freedom of Spain.
