So, why won't your riding mower turn over? I'll show you how to first diagnose this common Briggs & Stratton Intek camshaft decompression (also called compression release) issue, explain how the decompression cam works and the easy steps to repair it.
When this decompression / compression release part breaks, the symptom is pretty much identical to a weak battery or bad starter - the engine tries, but won't turn over.
What happens now is many people will replace the battery first, then the starter and perhaps even the starter solenoid; only to find out $200+ dollars later, their riding mower Intek engine still refuses to turn over. Welcome to the popular & growing club of Briggs Intek owners who have had a decompression camshaft failure.
