Why does Salieri poison Mozart in Pushkin’s interpretation?
Pushkin wanted to name his “little tragedy” about these two characters – “Jealousy”.
But changed his mind
In his play, Antonio Salieri envies his fellow composer Mozart.
But this is not the most important detail.
Salieri doesn’t understand, why God bestowed the sacred gift of music composition to such a reckless debauchee.
While hardworking Salieri has to live in his shadow.
He questions God’s decision and decides to correct His mistake.
He decides to poison Mozart.
Pushkin’s contemporaries argued about Salieri’s guilt. But the real Salieri never poisoned anyone.
At the end of the 18th century, Salieri had even more recognition than Mozart.
And had no grounds for envy.
However, Pushkin turned Salieri's name into an identifying moniker used to refer to jealous people capable of doing great evil.
