Texas-based, Australian-born artist Gil Bruvel creates sculptures of faces, deep in thought using wooden sticks. Different in shape and size, the sticks are burned, painted with subtle gradients, and then held in place with wood glue, causing the figures to appear pixelated when viewed up close.
Having trained extensively in his father’s cabinet-making business and later at a prestigious restoration workshop, Bruvel’s work displays a mastery of technique and high-level craftsmanship. His art emerges from deep contemplation of images, emotions, and sensations, which he refines continually before he casts them into material form.
