Judith Simcox: A Risk Worth Taking - Biochemist Judith Simcox recounts her journey from battling cancer to rediscovering her passion for science, and becoming a mentor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

~About the Film~

Judith Simcox is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Freeman Hrabowski scholar and an assistant professor of #biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

The short film follows Simcox's life story, highlighting her initial plans to join the Peace Corps and teach at a girls' school in Africa, which were abruptly halted when she was diagnosed with cancer. This challenging period forced her to reevaluate her identity and goals, leading her back to her passion for science. The film emphasizes the pivotal role of her mentor, Gerry Shields, in changing her life's direction and how Simcox now strives to mentor others, particularly those from underrepresented minority groups, in her own lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
