The residents of the potters' colony in Dharavi, mainly migrants from Saurashtra, have been engaged in their artistic craft for nearly three centuries. Even as they have tried to keep pace with changing technologies by working with electric wheels over the traditional manual one, by and large, they have maintained their distinct identity over the years. PUKAR's community journalist, Aniket Yadav through his elaborate photo essay, brings out the concerns of the locals with respect to large-scale redevelopment that has been proposed in Dharavi.
The locals claim that their fears are mainly centred on the possibility of giving up on their traditional livelihoods and its psychological impacts.
Will the locals be able to stand up for their concerns? Will the tradition live through such rampant redevelopment?
