Pulau Mengalum is about 1 hour 20 minutes by speedboat from Kota Kinabalu. Some people claim that the island can be reached in 50 minutes, depending on the speed of the boat.
The island is about 4 sq km, and will take about 1 hour to walk around it. The emerald water around the island is crystal clear, suitable for snorkelling. Unfortunately, according to some divers, much of the corals around the island is dead, the result of human unbridled activities.
Legend has it that the famous Portuguese voyager Ferdinand Magellan and his fleet stopped over at the island as they circumvented the world in the 16th century. It is believed that "Mengalum" is a corruption of "Magellan."
