Neural Amp Modeler versus Kemper!
I've used my deep learning modeler, "NAM" on a few tones and it sounds good to me...but how does it compare against an industry standard?
Answer: ...quite well!
I can't hear the difference between any of the 3, so I crunched the numbers to get quantitative answers.
The Kemper is generally within a dB across the main guitar frequency spectrum (100Hz-10kHz), but NAM gets under a *tenth* of a dB!
Across the full audible spectrum, the Kemper struggles a bit more (mostly on the low end), but NAM only picks up another 0.1 dB of error, still doing a great job on the super-lows and super-highs.
I got a ton of help from Edward Sokolowski of EAS Studios, who's got a nice Block Letter, a Kemper to profile it, a nice studio setup to capture everything, and a great ear for dialing in the guitar tones. Huge thanks for reamping some DIs + a test signal to get training data to fit NAM with, plus all the profiling & reamping to get the Kemper tones...and for making a great custom IR to suit the tone & the mix. I was excited by his video comparing the BL against a host of different plugins and hit him up to see how NAM would compare. Super-thankful to him for giving this a shot and for all the back & forth over the last few weeks leading up to this.
