Riot police firing live bullets and tear gas battled stone-throwing demonstrators at a bannned rally in Nairobi Friday (10/10) and beat up opposition members of parliament. The police broke up the 1,000 strong rally led by James Orengo, the deputy leader of the parliamentary opposition, chasing them into nearby slums and firing teargas into compounds as the demonstrators responded with stones.
The clashes occurred as President Daniel Arap Moi addressed a rally at Uhuru Park in central Nairobi to mark Moi day, a public holiday celebrating the 73-year-old president's accession to power 19 years ago.
Moi strongly condemned the continuing violence in Kenya and warned that his own Kenya African Nation Union (KANU) party would not allow people associated with violence to be nominated to contest elections expected near the end of this year.
Plain-clothes police beat up opposition member of parliament Paul Muite, a lawyer, before arresting him.
