(13 Apr 2014) Hundreds of people took part in a march in Peru's capital on Saturday to show their support for proposals to allow same-sex civil unions.
A coalition known as "Civil Union Now" organised the gathering in downtown Lima.
In September, Congress member Carlos Bruce introduced a bill to allow gay civil unions.
He was among those taking part in the march.
"It's a march for the equality to highlight that there are three (m) million Peruvians who do not have the same rights that others have and that we've taken a long time to seek legislative initiatives, so that these people could live life as couples with the same peace of mind that heterosexuals have," said Bruce.
Lawmakers were expected to debate the civil union bill this past week, but it was postponed until the end of Holy Week celebrations, local media reported.
"The civil union proposal seeks to protect love, seeks to give the same resources to all Peruvians to protect the persons they love most," said Giovanny Infante, who took part in the march.
In Latin America, civil unions for gay couples became legal in Colombia in 2013.
Gay marriage is legal only in the countries of Argentina and Uruguay and Mexico's capital, Mexico City.
Same-sex marriages are also allowed in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Quintana Roo, home to the resort city of Cancun.
The northern state of Coahuila began allowing same-sex civil unions in 2007.
