Japan's Ambassador to Australia Shingo Yamagami says "there is no question" there are "deep concerns" regarding the Taiwan Strait.
It comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a virtual meeting with his US counterpart Joe Biden, warned not to play with fire by encouraging Taiwan's independence.
"There is no question that we are deeply concerned about the situation across the Taiwan Strait," Mr Yamagami told Sky News Australia.
"In fact, we oppose any unilateral attempt, course of action, to challenge the status quo and increase tension in the East China Sea."
He said in the past year Australia and Japan devised a joint statement, in which "for the first time in history" the "importance of peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait was highlighted".
"So, hopefully, through dialogue between parties concerned, the issue will be resolved."
