Edmondson v. Shearer Lumber Products, 75 P.3d 733 (2003)

Under the at-will employment doctrine, employees may be fired for any reason or even for no reason. But there are some exceptions to this doctrine, including a public-policy exception. The Idaho Supreme Court considered whether that exception applied in the 2003 case Edmondson versus Shearer Lumber Products.

Michael Edmondson worked for Shearer Lumber Products at its Elk City, Idaho, mill for more than 20 years. Edmondson was known for being active in the Elk City community and regularly attending public meetings. In January of 2000, Edmondson went to a public meeting of the Save Elk City group. The group had submitted a proposal for managing a local national forest and was seeking public support for the proposal. Edmondson later learned that Shearer Lumber’s owner was responsible for the proposal, and Shearer Lumber expected its employees to support the proposal or else face serious consequences. Edmondson criticized the proposal to the federal task force in charge of evaluating the various proposals, leading Shearer Lumber to terminate his at-will employment.

Edmonson sued for wrongful termination in Idaho state court, claiming that Shearer Lumber breached the public-policy exception to the at-will employment doctrine when it fired him for exercising his constitutional free-speech rights. The trial court entered summary judgment for Shearer Lumber, and Edmondson appealed to the Idaho Supreme Court.
