Summary of Doctor Faustus. We have discussed the two major protagonist villains of Christopher Marlowe, namely Tamburlaine the Great and the Jew of Malta. Today we will discuss the plot and summary of Doctor Faustus. This drama of Christopher Marlowe is based upon the famous German legend of Faust. Christopher Marlowe popularized it in England with the creation of his renowned drama which was played by the actor's company Admiral's Men.
The plot of the drama is based on German legend character Faust who is a very successful erudite scholar but remains unsatisfied and wishes to attain as much knowledge and power as he can. He makes an agreement with the Devil that he will get unlimited knowledge and power and in exchange, he will have to sell his soul to the devil.
The other major characters in this drama include Wagner, the servant of Doctor Faustus. Robin the Clown, the protagonist who tries to oppose the treachery of Doctor Faustus.
Lucifer sends his officer devil Mephistophilis who makes a deal with Faustus and offers him 24 years of unlimited power and knowledge in exchange of his soul. He also promises to do all the bidding of Doctor Faustus while remaining his servant for 24 years. As Faustus signs the agreement, a carving appears on his arm which says 'Homo Fuge.'
In the end, Faustus is afraid of the repercussions of his immorality and sins and he begs to God and Devils to forgive him. But, the Devils Mephistopheles and Beelzebub drags him to the hell. Doctor Faustus was one of the most successful dramas of the Elizabethan era of English literature which was published in the Jacobean era of the history of English literature.
