Borealis is an ethereal immersive light art installation that aims to recreate the effects and feeling of viewing the Northern Lights. It was created and presented by artist Dan Archer and we were lucky enough to see it in August 2021 when it appeared as part of the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF).
From certain angles you could get the effect of subtle Northern Lights floating around Canary Wharf tower and from other positions you would be completely immersed in the ever shifting light effects. Contrasted against the City, in a place it would the Aurora Borealis is highly unlikely to be seen it was a mesmerising and thought provoking experience.
Within the grounds of Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich, the Northern Lights gently flowed around the warm white lighting of the historic buildings and it was very emotive. From certain angles it was super dramatic and from some a bit obvious where the magic was coming from but it was easy to ignore this and get lost in the lit effects of the green glowing light and a floating haze.
We would definitely recommend checking this out next time its on display somewhere.
