As land dwelling animals, humans depend upon the land and land-based systems for basic survival. All humans, therefore, have a relationship to the land and this remains true regardless of how far removed from the land we might be in day-to-day life. It was my own consciousness of this reality that motivated my movement towards securing access to land, just four acres, and doing so has been nothing less than life affirming. I believe that the drive to be more self-sufficient, which is typically an aim of the smallholder, is about so much more than meeting basic needs of subsistence - it is an assertion of existence, sometimes of resistance, and always of personal sovereignty. 'The Promised Land', a Nordic drama starring Mads Mikkelsen and Amanda Collin, is a movie that depicts a human-land relationship and its impact upon personhood as a state of human being.
