Santorini, Island in the Aegean Sea.
When we decided to include Greece in our Eurotrip, at first, we thought of visiting Athens probably because it’s a historic capital and we heard this name so many times. But when we started to dig deep, we realized that there are so many beautiful Greek islands, and we should visit at least one of them. But most of them are far from Athens, and we had only five days to spend in Greece. So didn’t want to spend a whole day or so on our way. Most importantly, the image of those blue domes of Santorini had such an impression on our mind there was no way we could convince ourselves not to visit Santorini. Well, here we are…… 😊
So it was a midnight flight from Rome, we reached in Santorini at 4 am. But we could not pick up our rental car before 6 am. Also, Santorini airport is tiny, considering the area of this island that is understandable. You cannot sleep at Santorini airport, but you can easily find a place to wait for 2/3 hours. The initial plan was picking up the car and taking a nap inside the car as our check-in time in the hotel was 12 pm. But, as soon as we started driving we have fallen for the mesmerizing Santorini view of early dawn and decided to enjoy the sunrise in the nearest beach. That peaceful, refreshing morning took away all the tiredness of the night journey…
We had an hour or so till our checking time, so drove towards famous three blue domes. Oh boy….the view of the Aegean sea with three domes and beautifully decorated white-blue houses from Oia is just out of the World…it’s like a dreamland. It felt like I could sit and treat my eyes and soul with that spectacular view forever…
We then enjoyed our breakfast in one of the seaside restaurants. We later checked into a small, quiet, and cheap but beautiful hotel (that was awesome as most of the accommodation is super expensive in Santorini). After a nap, in the afternoon, we again went to roam around Oia (which is a five-minute drive from our hotel), posed for probably hundreds of photos and videos here and there. Finally, it was our lucky day with a clear sky, so we got to see the most awaited beautiful sunset from Oia castle. What a majestic evening it was!!! Any picture or video won’t do justice for how peaceful it feels to sit and witness a sunset like this.
We finally ended our 1st day in Santorini with a great dinner in one of the Thai restaurants.
Let us know if you like our trip and any help in planning your Euro trip when things become normal again.
