Early in his career, Nat King Cole started a ground breaking trio in 1937, playing piano with Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince on bass. This version of the King Cole Trio (as it was known) played a mixture of novelty songs, jazz and pop tunes, often with unison singing from all three members, as well as Nat's lead vocal.
When Prince was drafted, Johnny Miller took over on bass in 1942, and by this time, Nat's voice was more to the fore, and there were less novelty songs. The melody to this song was written by Sammy Fain, and the lyrics by Irving Kahal and Pierre Norman in 1931. It was released by the trio in 1947, and later that same year Oscar Moore left to be replaced by Irving Ashby. The trio kept going until Nat's career really took off with singing ballads backed mainly by orchestras. At this point, Nat was not playing much piano, which was a pity, as he was a really hot and infuential jazz pianist.
