On Robben Island with Nelson Mandela: An Interview with Fellow Prisoner Eddie Daniels by Pepperdine Law Professor Tom Stipanowich
At South Africa's infamous Robben Island prison, Pepperdine law professor and Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution director Tom Stipanowich interviews Eddie Daniels, an anti-apartheid activist who was imprisoned with Nelson Mandela. In this 2012 interview, Daniels recounts the events leading up to his imprisonment, including his membership in the Liberal Party and African Resistance Movement and his years at Robben Island (1964-1979), during which his fellow prisoners included Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and other ANC leaders in the "Rivonia Group" ANC and other anti-apartheid groups--a period recounted in Mandela's book Long Walk to Freedom. Interview footage from the prison includes interrogation rooms, cell blocks (including Nelson Mandela's prison cell) and the prison yard where prisoners broke rocks. Daniels describes his relationship with Mandela and the latter's kindness and empathy, resulting in a life-long friendship.
