A whistle, like the one blown to send soldiers out of the trenches and over the top, brought Barnsley to a standstill as panels etched with the faces of some of the 297 Barnsley Pals, who died on the first day of the battle of The Somme, was unveiled at an an emotional centenary service outside the Town Hall.
