The animal husbandry depends largely on fodder crop production. Forage crops are grown and harvested for animal feed in the form of green forage, silage, hay, or other forms. The low productivity of livestock is a matter of concern, and is primarily due to insufficient fodder and feed resources. Concerted efforts are needed to augment the production of high yielding forage crops to enhance the productivity of animal wealth. The improved varieties of (i) Forage Sorghum: GAFS 11, GAFS 12, CoFS-29 and CSV 33 MF, (ii) Forage Bajra: GFB 1 and GAFB 4 (iii) Maize: African Tall, Gujarat Maize 3, 4, 6 and J-1006 (iv) Cowpea: GFC 1 and GFC 3 (v) Cluster bean: HFG 2, Durgapur White and Sirsa 1, (vi) Hybrid Napier: CO 3 and CO 5, (vi) Marvel grass: GMG 1 and GAMG 2 (vii) Guinea grass: JHGG-8-1, CO(GG) 3, and (viii) Cenchrus grass: GAAG 1 are recommended for cultivation in Gujarat for the kharif season.
