4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gene Kritsky, cicada expert:
“There's a lot of things in the world today to get freaked out about. Cicadas aren't one of them. But what I love about cicadas is that, first of all, to me, they're beautiful insects. They've got these red eyes, black bodies, orange coloured veins on these membranous wings. I love the way they come out in these big numbers. I like that I can predict when they come out. It's a scientific experiment every time.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Gene Kritsky, cicada expert:
“When they come out, they emerge in these massive numbers. Their whole survival strategy is to come out in such large numbers that all the available predators can eat all the cicadas they want and there's still millions left and the predators get sick of eating them.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Gene Kritsky, cicada expert:
“When periodical cicadas emerge, during that night of their emergence, when they’re climbing up trees and they’re getting out of their nymphal skin and turning into an adult, they don't sing for another five days. So when you walk out in the morning and you see all these empty cicada shells all around it, and it's deathly quiet. But then five days later, you'll start hearing weak chorusing. And then day four, you'll hear individual sound calls. But then every day thereafter, those first ones that emerge and the ones that emerge on day two and day three and day four, and by the time a week goes by, it's getting pretty loud.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Gene Kritsky, cicada expert:
“Periodical cicadas are insects of climate. And we have two manifestations to suggest climate change is having an impact. The obvious one is they're emerging earlier in the spring than they used to.”

“The second impact of climate change for long term is it will cause more accelerations – these four year off cycles – and we've seen several of those.”

LEADIN:
People in eastern US states are witnessing a natural phenomenon which scientists say hasn't been seen for over two centuries.
It's the mass arrival of hundreds of millions of the red eyed periodical cicadas, which only appear in 13 or 17 year cycles.
