The Dimmuborgir lava fields near Lake Myvatn in Iceland are a unique sight, which is probably why they were featured in Game of Thrones. The lava formations and lava caves are quite large and were formed 2,300 years ago when lava from an erupting volcano passed over a lake, causing it to boil. This caused the lava to cool and the steam shattered parts of it. When it solidified, the area formed many volcanic formations. According to Iceland's folklore, evil trolls live in the lava caves, but I didn't see any.
