For four days over the August bank holiday weekend, thousands attended Manchester Pride 2023 and welcomed every single moment of joy and celebration - even in the face of a little bit of rain.
This year’s festival kicked off on Friday (August 27) with a Human Rights Forum discussion featuring the likes of trans activist Charlie Craggs and RuPaul's Drag Race UK star Cheddar Gorgeous, alongside an evening of Trans Filth and Joy in Sackville Gardens.
Saturday’s Pride Parade - a staple feature of the Pride weekend - began in Deansgate at midday and featured more than 200 floats from organisations, charities, and businesses proudly waving the flag for LGBTQ+ rights and celebrating this year’s parade theme of ‘Queerly Beloved’, to mark 10 years of marriage equality in England and Wales.
The party spirit continued over the weekend as the Gay Village’s many bars and clubs opened its doors and welcomed visitors with a whole host of live entertainment and fun. The three main stages within the area, meanwhile, featured a whole host of local and international performers, including Danny Beard, Jake Shears, Alison Goldfrapp, Natasha Bedingfield and Lisa Scott-Lee.
There was also a Queer Asian Takeover - the first of its kind - which welcomed a plethora of Asian artists who often find themselves excluded from Pride line-ups and underrepresented within the LGBTQ+ community.
As with every Manchester Pride before it, people took the opportunity to dress boldly with colourful and bright outfits. Top fashion trends over the weekend included Barbiecore, crop tops and, naturally, plenty of face glitter.
The festival concluded with a powerful Candlelight Vigil in Sackville Gardens where people came together to pay their respects and honour those before us who have fought for equality and those who we have lost to HIV.
