The Main Event was a spin-off of Saturday Night's Main Event, a succesful network television show produced by the WWF and airing on NBC. The first ever Main Event, taking place in February 1988, still holds the record as the most watched professional wrestling show in American television history with a staggering 33 million viewers tuning in.
The Main Event #1 on NBC featured 2 matches; Macho Man Randy Savage vs The Honky Tonk Man for the Intercontinental Championship and Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant for the WWF Championship. Fans were treated to a title change on this evening and the build towards WrestleMania IV started at this very show.
