Hypoparathyroidism vs hyperparathyroidism nursing NCLEX review. This video will compare and contrast hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism in regards to causes, signs & symptoms, nursing interventions, treatments, and medications. Hypoparathyroidism is the low production of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid gland, whereas hyperparathyroidism is the excessive production of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid gland. Patients with hypoparathyroidism will present with hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia, and patients with hyperparathyroidism will present with hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia.
