The so-called "Lamborghini of chickens, " the Ayam Cemani. A pair of Ayam Cemani chickens can cost up to $5000 because of their remarkable, all-black appearance (even down to their bones and blood).
There are approximately 3500 of them out there, the majority of whom are in Europe or their home country of Indonesia. To register on the waiting list for one of these rare creatures, you must pay $100.
Even its bones and internal organs are black on this chicken.
The Ayam Cemani is a chicken breed that originated on the Indonesian island of Java. Although its actual origins are unknown, it is thought to be the result of a hybrid between the green and red jungle chicken.
Even its name is ambiguous, with "Ayam" referring to chicken in Indonesian and "Cemani" alluding to a hamlet or'solid black' in Sanskrit.
The Ayam Cemani possesses an unusual feature known as fibromelanosis, which causes hyperpigmentation in the chicken's body, causing it to turn black. However, unlike albinism, it causes black tissue, black bones, and even black internal organs in addition to the skin and feathers. Its blood, on the other hand, remains red, slightly darker than that of domestic chickens.
In Indonesia, these chickens were considered status symbols and were kept by affluent families who provided care for them. They were believed to have magical powers and might serve as a bridge between the living and spirit realms because of their mysterious appearance.
The breed was found by Dutch immigrants when they saw the natives employing them in religious rituals, where they were sometimes sacrificed to honor the gods. Fascinated by their beauty, several of these immigrants wished to bring them back to Europe, but it wasn't until 1998 that a Dutch breeder named Jan Steverink brought them in.
The Ayam Cemani has several distinct feather kinds, but the bottlebrush type is the most valuable, with a single bird costing up to $5,000.
In the United States, there are fewer than a thousand Ayam Cemani with completely black tongues, and those with pink tongues are likely to have only one of the two fibromelanistic features, disqualifying them from competitions.
Even top-tier fibromelanosis, however, does not persist forever, and as the Ayam Cemani age, their flesh might gradually turn grey. Aside from their appearance, one of the reasons they are so expensive is that, unlike other hens who lay eggs, the Ayam Cemani only lays one or two eggs per week, for a total of 60 to 100 per year.
Furthermore, after laying twenty to thirty eggs, they may stop laying for up to six months before starting again. When combined with the fact that not all chicks will reveal their stunning black hue, rearing purebred Ayam Cemani is challenging, which is why they're so hard to find.
Contrary to popular perception, while chicks develop their black coloring during embryonic development, the eggs themselves are pale cream with a slight pink tint.
Despite their expensive price and odd coloring, they're not difficult to keep, and breeders describe them as strong and resilient chickens that can tolerate most diseases.
The strange and amazing have always captivated us, and the Ayam Cemani, with its unique look, is no exception. Whether or not they have mystical abilities, the fact that their flesh, organs, and even bone marrow are black should make us wonder what other weird species exist out there.
