This video from Regional Educational Laboratory Midwest (REL Midwest) discusses the most effective evidence-based practices for identifying and assisting struggling readers. Strategies in this video are based on the What Works Clearinghouse practice guide, Assisting Students Struggling with Reading: Response to Intervention (RtI) and Multi-Tier Intervention in the Primary Grades ([ Ссылка ]).
Beginning readers develop reading skills at different rates. Viewers will learn about evidence-based practices that teachers can use to support students at different reading levels including screening all students for potential reading problems; providing time for differentiated reading instruction; providing intensive, systematic instruction on up to three foundational reading skills in small groups to students who score below the benchmark score on universal screening; monitoring the progress of tier 2 students at least once a month; and providing intensive, daily instruction that promotes the development of the various components of reading proficiency to students who show minimal progress after a reasonable time in tier 2 small-group instruction.
