If you have wax moths in your beehive, chances are your hive is dead or dying. One of the main ways to prevent wax moths invading your bee hive is to keep a strong colony in it. Ensuring the volume of bees can work all the frames with drawn comb to protect the valuable resources of a colony from wax moths and small hive beetles ('SHB')
In this video we are discussing a technique we use here at Bohemia Apiary in order to stop the proliferation of wax moths and SHB'once the colony has collapsed or absconded and you are trying to save the valuabel comb from being destroyed by these pests.
One of the most underrated tools in a honey bee apiary is a freezer. As you see in this video we use it to freezer our frames, even if it has some wax moth damage already. Once frozen for 48 hours the eggs and any larva from the wax moth or SHB will be destroyed, leaving the comb and any resources in the comb behind to reuse in another hive.
There are a few other steps involved when you identify wax moths or SHB in an active hive but in this video we are showing what we do with a dead-out.

Videos are produced, edited, and published by Jason Crook, Owner & Operator of Bohemia Apiary. Jason is a University of Montana Master Certified Beekeeper, who has been keeping bees for almost a decade and enjoys sharing his experiences with the craft of beekeeping. Remember beekeeping is local, our videos outline are what works for us and are not intended to be a prescription for your bee colonies or how to operate your apiary. Although these concepts are generally endorsed by many beekeepers you have to listen, watch, and learn from your bees as well as other resources in the craft of beekeeping.
