Heavy rain and severe flooding on New Year’s Day have caused major disruptions across Greater Manchester, with roads closed, rail services canceled, and authorities declaring a major incident.

Key routes, including the M56 and A555 bypass, are impassable, while rivers like the Tame and Mersey have reached record levels, and Manchester canals have overflowed.

Over 80mm of rainfall has been recorded in 24 hours, prompting safety warnings and a new ice alert from the Met Office.
