Why improvise? A few reasons.
The first and most important reason is simply to be creative; to attempt to add some artistry to the role of curator, which is largely how today's classical musicians function.
The art of improvising was endemic to the traditions of western classical music for centuries. By practicing this art, one is brought closer to its raison d'être.
Secondarily, improvising in this way fit the specific focus of this specific programme: essentially, to highlight sustained modality.
Using certain elements of Shostakovich's Prelude (the gentle Sarabande rhythm, a voicing structure emphasising the upper-middle registers of the piano), I stayed with the same 'drone' modality in the left hand and played around with polytonality in the right.
