Church basement | crypt in Venice, Italy.
Designed by Giovanni Antonio Scalfarotto and completed in 1738, this neoclassical building is one of the last churches to be built in Venice. Church San Simeone Piccolo is not well known and isn't documented in most travel guides. My boyfriend and I were aimlessly wondering the city to see what sights would unfold. This turned out to be such a mysterious gem we stumbled upon. We entered the main doors after dark. It was quiet and a bit empty compared to other churches we visited that day. We were greeted by an unassuming man whom appeared to be a church-keeper of sorts. He offered a candle for 2 euros and pointed down to a dark staircase that had a simple paper sign, with an arrow that led the way into a very dark maze of this amazing crypt.
