The Origin of Tinga Tinga Art
The Tinga Tinga style was created by Edward Saidi Tingatinga, who lived from 1932 to 1972. Born in Namochelia, in southern Tanzania, Edward eventually moved to Dar es Salaam where he worked as a gardener and ward attendant. Inspired by the success of Congolese artists selling their work in Tanzania, he decided to try his hand at painting.
Starting with bicycle gloss paint and hardboard tiles due to limited resources, Edward quickly developed a distinctive style that featured animated and brightly colored depictions of wildlife and village scenes. Despite having only four years to create his art, his work gained significant attention and he painted for Tanzania's National Arts Company.
The Legacy of Edward Tingatinga
Tragically, Edward's life was cut short when he was accidentally killed by a stray bullet. However, his art lived on. His family and other artists continued his legacy, and the Tinga Tinga Cooperative Society was established in 1990 to preserve and promote his unique style. Today, the Cooperative includes nearly 100 artists dedicated to keeping Edward’s vision alive.
**The Evolution of Tinga Tinga**
Tinga Tinga art gained international popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Originally painted on hardboard panels, the medium evolved to oils on canvas, making it easier for tourists to take these vibrant pieces home. Artists experimented with different techniques to create the best quality paintings, resulting in a signature style that uses enamel paints for a glossy finish and vivid backgrounds.
