History
On May 27, 1960, ITB students began holding Friday prayers in congregation in the West Hall building, ITB Ganesha Campus. This activity is the first Friday prayer held on campus in Indonesia. Before that, ITB students who intend to perform Friday prayers must first walk to the Cipaganti Mosque in the Cihampelas area.
Over time, the desire to build a campus mosque became increasingly popular among students and the surrounding community. The initiation of the campus mosque construction at ITB encountered several problems. At that time, Islam in Indonesia had just experienced a revival amid the popularity of the PKI.
In addition, Muslim men who ask for permission to perform Friday prayers are seen as strange because of the western culture that is still thick in the campus environment. Even the Chancellor of ITB at that time, Prof. Ir. Otong Kosasih, considers that the construction of a mosque in the ITB environment is not necessary. He also reasoned that "if Muslims ask for a mosque, later the communists will also ask for Red Square at ITB."
Despite disagreements from several parties, a team consisting of Prof. T.M. Soelaiman, Achmad Sadali, Imaduddin Abdulrachim, Mahmud Junus, and several others continued to seek support and approval. As a result, they received support from a Christian planology lecturer named Drs. Woworuntu and the head of the ITB Architecture Department from the Netherlands named Prof. Romend.
On May 28, 1964, Prof. TM Soelaiman, Achmad Noe'man, Achmad Sadali, and Ajat Sudrajat went with a mosque design to the Presidential Palace to seek approval for the construction of a mosque from President Soekarno. Through the meeting, Soekarno agreed to build a mosque in the ITB campus environment.
Soekarno also gave the name "Salman" to the mosque to be built. The name comes from the name of a Persian technocrat who initiated the construction of the canal during the Battle of Khandaq.
In 1964, the new rector of ITB, Prof. Ukar Bratakusuma approved the construction of a mosque in a cornfield beside Jalan Ganesha. At the end of 1964, a temporary prayer room was completed. Due to lack of funds, the first part of the mosque to be built was the minaret. The tower was inaugurated on June 22, 1965.
On May 5, 1972, the mosque building was inaugurated along with the Friday prayers.
