Since max incorporated a physics engine into the application it has been possible to realistically simulate collisions both elastically and inelastically without having to edit the key frames manually. I am going to show you a basic reactor setup to help you get started. After that its just a matter of experimenting with the parameters to get different effects and more what you would like to achieve.
So to start off, just build a quick basic scene. Make sure there is a ground plane at a couple cubes and then throw in a sphere or to. This is what I came up with.
