Last time, we binged all the optional side quests in the game. I think there might be one last one left in the upcoming town of Eureka, but I'm not sure. The guides I've read seem to conflate the NES version and 3D remake for DS. So it's possible we might not see it in this version. But all confirmed optional side quests are covered in the last chapter, with the sole exception of the town of Falgabard, which is covered in the one prior to that one. Now we'll finally head to Doga's Manor and the Ancient Maze, to begin to wrap things up. Let's jump right in!
CHAPTER 10 - DOGA'S MANOR & ANCIENT MAZE
So prior to doing this, I went back to Doga's Village and made sure to purchase any spells I had possibly overlooked. I went ahead and picked up all the summons for sale as well. I haven't used the 'Evoker' job yet, but we'll soon be getting the 'Summoner', so it'd be good to have the option. When you're ready, grab the Nautilus and head back to Doga's Manor. When you enter, you'll be sent to a separate area. This is a one-time only area, so make sure to grab any treasures and if you're looking to get 100% on the Bestiary, make sure to encounter the following monsters: Nemesis, Cyclops, Peryton, Humbaba, and Ogre.
There are no hidden passage here, at least. So for the most part, you can simply check the map and head for the next exit. Eventually, you'll reach a room where Doga and Unei are waiting for you. They'll tell you need the Eureka Key in order to enter the Crystal Tower. In order to make the key, they'll need to generate a large amount of energy that only occurs during battle. So you'll have to fight both Doga and Unei in separate boss fights. Neither of them are very challenging, but don't let your guard down and heal as needed. Afterwards, you'll be given the Eureka Key and the Syrcus Key. Teleport out and head back in. Doga's mansion will be back to normal and you can use the heal-spring pots to heal your party.
Some guides I've read do this next part immediately after the Cave of Shadows, but I decided to wait. Grab the Invincible and head a little northwest from the mountain maze that leads to the Cave of Shadows. You'll see a little passage that leads to a row bordered by statues. If you try to fly in between them, you'll be pushed back. You'll need to get off the airship and actually walk in between them. The various 'Fang' items you collected throughout the game will now come in handy and destroy each set of statues, as you walk in between them. Once the four sets are destroyed, hop back in the airship and use it jump over the narrow mountain ridge.
Fly a little to the east and you should quickly see a large tower surrounded by boxy structure, this is the Ancient Maze. When you enter, head straight up to find the fourth and final Crystal, the Earth Crystal. Immediately though, you'll be thrown into a boss fight against Titan, who looks a lot like 'Hecantoncheir'. He's stronger than him too, but at this point, it should be no problem for your party. 'Bio' seems to do some good damage, but Titan officially has no weakness. He'll use physical attacks, along with spells like Quake and Flare. Just keep pummeling him until he croaks. Now, you'll be rewarded with three more jobs: Devout, Magus and Summoner.
These three jobs are upgraded versions of the White Mage, Black Mage and Evoker, respectively. Switching your mages over to Devout and Magus will greatly increase their MP for the higher-level spells. You might want to head back to the airship to heal, if your MP has been depleted. Now we head back in to tackle the Ancient Maze. It may be called a maze, but it's fairly straight-forward. As usually, there will be only one path forward. There's some good treasures here, so make sure and grab them all. There's also a very strong monster called 'Behemoth'. If you beat him, you'll score 10,000 sweet experience points.
At the end of the maze, you'll end up outside again. But this time, you'll be standing in front of the Crystal Tower, the notoriously long final dungeon. As the Earth Crystal mentioned earlier, the antagonist Xande, is trying to amplify the power of the crystals to summon the 'Cloud of Darkness'. We'll be tackling that next time, as we delve into quite possibly the final chapter of this walkthrough!
