CU NASSER COMMENTARY: Once again, as so often in the course of their long history the land of Cleopatra and the city of Cairo are the focus of world attention. Egypts days of complaicancy under the rule of King Farouk are in the past. The playboy monarch and his subserviant parliament are just noxious memories in the Cairo of 1963. The change begin in with the military coup d'etat in 1952 which sent the King into exile. General Neguib was the frontman of that uprising but the power behind the scenes was the man on the left Gemel Abdul Nasser. Since coming to power Nasser has become one of the potent international leaders who must be reckoned with in any dealings with the Middle East. The daring seizure and nationalisation of the Suez Canal in 1956 was one of Nasser's first moves to world leadership. Then a few months later this Anglo-French expedition regained control of the Canal further increased Nassera prestige. For although the invaders were succesful Nasser supported by the United States and Soviet Russia won the day. He blocked the waterway until Egypt's Canal rights were established beyond question. His successes made Nasser a hero in the Middle East and Syria's leader Kuatly joined him to create the United Arab Republic a move that put him in a fait way to control this strategic region. Jordan's King Hussein and Saudi Arabia's King Saud weren't having any of Nasser's leadership but the Egyptian went right ahead. When Yemen revolted again the Immam Nasser sent troops and arms into support the rebels. etc. etc.
