Dragonflies are often confused with the similar looking damselfly, however, these two insects aren't classified in the same groups. Dragonflies tend to be bulkier and rest with their wings open while damselflies are thin and rest with their wings closed. There are, of course, exceptions to this, but this applies to most of the over 3,000 dragonfly species. Dragonflies live worldwide except Antarctica and inhabit all kinds of habitats, though they're most often associated with water as their larvae do go through a water-living stage.
