STORYLINE:
Border officials in eastern Romania say they have tightened security along their border ahead of a key North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) summit to be held in Bucharest this week.
Home to some 300-thousand people, the eastern Romanian city of Galati lies on the banks of the Danube River, close to the borders with Ukraine and Moldova.
AP Television footage showed officials checking boats, cars and travellers in the area, some 250 kilometres (155 miles) northeast of the capital.
"We took special security measures to carry out tight controls of cars and passengers, to prevent any action which can affect national security," Adrian Nastase, a border police spokesman in Galati explained.
Romania's border represents a quarter of the European Union's entire external border, measuring over 2-thousand kilometres (1242 miles).
Romania prepared for its role as the EU's new eastern border by installing a high-tech security system on its frontier to keep non-EU citizens from entering the bloc.
The 20th NATO summit will be the largest one in NATO history, with all 23 member states of the NATO Partnership for Peace scheduled to attend, besides the 26 member states of the alliance.
Approximately 3-thousand high-ranking officials are expected to participate in the April 2-4 summit.
Their security will be guarded by some 9-thousand Romanian troops, officers of the Special Guard and Protections Service, police officers and gendarmes, at an estimated cost of 47-55 (m) US dollars.
The summit is turning into a critical test for the alliance, which is split on the issue of Ukraine and Georgia.
Alliance members will discuss granting the two ex-Soviet states the so-called Membership Action Plan, a precursor to full membership.
The last NATO Summit was held in Riga, Latvia in 2006.
