Keratoconus, Keratoconus is a degenerative disease of the cornea. There is Progressive thinning and weakness of the cornea resulting in change in the visual acuity and irregular astigmatism. What causes keratoconus ? Exact etiology or the cause is not known. Sometimes we have implicated to a genetic predisposition. Allergies associated with chronic eye rubbing can also cause keratoconus. It is usually seen in the early teenagers or in young adolescents. How do you recognize that you have keratoconus? Patients can present with chronic eye rubbing, eye squeezing, after a while the vision does not improve even with glasses. It is usually seen in both eyes. Both eyes are affected probably asymmetrically. What are the treatment modalities available? We can treat keratoconus using glasses. Second by contact lenses. In the initial stages we can use soft toric contact lenses. RGP lenses or it's called as a rigid gas permeable lenses when soft toric lenses cannot correct the visual activity we can try RGB lenses in them. We have other options of RGP. We have mini scleral lenses and scleral lenses. Thus we can correct the visual acuity of the patient and the patient is pretty comfortable with these contact lenses.
