Last month, before home-quarantine became the law of the land, we stumbled upon Old Tucson while exploring Southeastern Arizona. Originally built by Columbia Pictures in 1939 as a set for the American Western film Arizona (1940), Old Tucson is a movie studio and theme park designed to look like the real town of Tucson, AZ from the 1860’s.
Old Tucson opened to the public in 1960 and operated for another 35 years until a mysterious fire completely leveled the park. An official investigation conducted by state, local and federal agencies concluded that the fire was set intentionally, and a former job applicant was identified as a suspect. However, due to a lack of evidence, this suspect was never formally charged, and the case remains open to this day. While there were no human casualties, the fire destroyed priceless pieces of film history. The park reopened on January 2, 1997 after undergoing 20 months of reconstruction and has been open to the public ever since.
