On episode 3 of Marketing Mavericks, we welcomed a longtime friend to Consume to chat about marketing in the cyber security industry. We got amazing insight into the cyber security marketing space and found out some unique ways to relate to your audience.
In this episode of the Marketing Mavericks Vlogcast, our host Leo Falkenstein welcomes Lauren Patrick, Director of Community & Customer Marketing at Uptycs. They discuss what Lauren finds difficult in cyber security marketing, advice for someone trying to follow her same career path, and the tradeshow nerd wall.
Guest-at-a-Glance
Lauren Patrick is the Director of Community & Customer Marketing at Uptycs. With 15+ years of B2B experience ranging from pre-seed startups to billion-dollar enterprises, Lauren is a true believer in growth "smarketing." Based out of Atlanta, she serves as a marketing mentor for entrepreneurs in the ATL Tech Village and as an advisor for venture-backed startups. A graduate of University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication (Go Dawgs!) she enjoys mentoring "Baby Bulldogs" after their graduation, which is how she was first introduced to Leo & Michael at Consume Media!
Key Insights
🌊 "Difficulties". Lauren starts off by saying that attribution is of the utmost importance. How can you show that by investing a dollar or time in one area, it will lead to an ROI back to the business. She follows this up with her solution: organizational alignment. Everybody in the business needs to be on the same page from all different departments, sales, marketing, product, etc. This is a great way to ensure everyone is rallied around the people that are using the tools, tech, or service you’re providing.
🌊 "Advice". Rather than trying to learn every aspect about marketing that you possibly can, Lauren advises to lean into just one part of marketing. Develop, refine, and master that one skill to show employers that you can be a self-starter. Lauren says its important to show to hiring managers that you own your professional development and you have a growth mindset.
🌊 "Nerd Wall". As far as tradeshows go, it’s hard to stand out amongst the sea of products that every business is there to sell or promote. Knowing how to read your audience can easily set you apart from every other brand. This is where the nerd wall comes into play. Lauren would set up what she calls the nerd wall. It’s filled with comic books, funko pops, etc.. This tactic sets up the segue of “making you fall in love with us, then we’re going to show you how cool our tech is.”
