The Central Mediterranean has been emptied of rescue boats, the result of a sustained campaign to criminalize NGOs trying to save lives at European borders. Even as we hear the news of fatal shipwrecks, Sea-Watch 4 and our MSF team onboard remains trapped in the port of Palermo, unable to resume life-saving operations.
There is a danger the systematic detention of rescue assets is becoming perceived as the new “normal”, but it is unacceptable that men, women and children are being left to die in the water, within weeks of the EU heralding its new humane approach to migration.
