More shelling of PYD
The Turkish military has shelled YPG positions in northern Syria for a sixth day. It follows a car bombing in Ankara on Wednesday night. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed the YPG. The group is the Syrian branch of the PKK terror group based in Turkey’s southeast. The YPG’s political wing, the PYD, denied carrying out the attack. The suicide bombing targeted a military vehicle, killing 28 people and wounding 61 others. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the bomber was a Syrian national and member of the YPG.
MSF won’t give hospital info
Doctors Without Borders says it will stop giving Russia and the Syrian regime information about the location of its hospitals that are in areas under rebel control. The aid organisation says more than 60 of its facilities in Syria were hit last year. And on Monday, air strikes hit its hospital in Idlib. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in the UK, blamed the attack on Russia. Meanwhile, international powers agreed to a ‘cessation of hostilities’ last week. It had been scheduled to begin on Thursday night.
Brussels Summit on EU
The UK has yet to reach a deal to redefine its relationship with the rest of the EU. The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, said that the sides had made ‘some progress’ during the first day of the summit in Brussels. One of the main points of disagreement is how long the UK would be able to ‘put a brake’ on welfare for low-income workers coming in from other EU countries. If the deal is approved, the UK could hold a referendum on whether to stay in the
EU as early as June.
Obama approves North Korea sanctions
President Barack Obama has approved new sanctions against North Korea. Pyongyang recently tested what it called a hydrogen bomb. It’s also launched what it says was an earth observation satellite, but the US, Japan and South Korea say it was actually a ballistic missile test. The new US sanctions also set aside 50 million dollars for communications systems and humanitarian assistance programmes for North Korea.
