This is my re-imagined and remastered version of the opening title sequence for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In beautiful, crisp 4k!
To me, this is what should have opened the director's edition of TMP. I'm sorry, but the gold flashy letters with the quick dissolve honestly look amateurish and not of the best quality for the digital rendering technology we have today. I think I've gotten it right here.
The letters are 3D to give them some depth and power. The surface is a brushed metal, almost chrome. Modern enough to look fresh, but bright enough to look almost white, like the original titles were. I also kept the "smash cut" style from one title to the next, to stay true to the original film.
So I basically modernized them and improved the resolution, but at the same time, didn't make anything too drastic of a departure from the original look overall. Play it on the big TV with the lights off. When you really look at them, they're not out of date at all, and the more silvery look, surprisingly coupled with a font from the 1970's (which you would think would look corny) produces an effect that brings the sequence right into the 21st century. The font might seem gaudy to some, but hey, some say gaudy is back in a lot of ways! Either way, I hope you like it.
