Topic: Schools as community service platforms: the next frontier?
Can schooling be designed so that every young person succeeds?
Children and young people are struggling, with worsening outcomes in many domains of their health, wellbeing and learning.
While educators talk about how to raise falling achievement levels, community services are overwhelmed with children presenting with complex problems that may have underlying health problems but are compounded by psychosocial factors.
The current service system is fragmented, with major access and equity issues. It was designed for a different era - it is manifestly inadequate for today’s problems. The present policy settings are unlikely to offer any significant sustained improvement in outcomes.
In this lecture, Professor Oberklaid AM MD FRACP will explore how we can rethink educational settings as universal platforms to help develop a better-coordinated and multidisciplinary service model, focused on prevention, early detection, and intervention, an approach that is consistent with research on how to make a difference.
