SMEs account for more than 99 percent of all UK businesses. They are the lifeblood of the British economy. Yet over two-fifths of businesses have seen sales decrease during the pandemic and just under a third have cut jobs. Even before the pandemic, British SMEs were faced with Brexit uncertainty, declining productivity, and a digital skill shortage which left them less likely to digitise back office functions than their peers in other countries. From better financing to digital skills, what can policymakers do to turn the UK’s SME population into a growth engine?
