Arizona is home to twenty-two Native American Tribes, each with historic and unique water rights and legal considerations shaped by federal policies, treaties, court decisions and legislative actions. Today, only eleven Arizona Tribes have fully settled or adjudicated their water rights claims. Understanding the historical and legal context of federal Indian policy is essential for understanding the status of Tribal water rights and water rights claims in Arizona.
In this webinar, Kyl Center Senior Research Fellow Cora Tso, JD, will provide a comprehensive overview of federal Indian policy as it relates to Tribal water rights. The webinar will highlight how western water law – from the prior appropriation doctrine to the complexities of water allocation and management – intersects with the rights and interests of Native American Tribes in Arizona.
This webinar is co-sponsored by the ASU Arizona Water Innovation Initiative.
