Rotring Isograph | How To Hold The Pen Properly
so i have here the roaching isograph and this is the .35 size nib so i've been asked a few questions about this pen i have made some videos tutorials of how to draw with it and a review of the pen but we're going to look at how to hold the pen for when you are doing drawings so that you can properly do your drawing without damaging the nib or having any problems with ink flow or anything else related to the pen so let's go ahead and uncap this it might take me a second get this ink to flow but we'll have to take a look here
that's going to shake the ink up a little bit and get it working some
because it's been sitting on my table um past 24 hours okay there we go so when you're holding this pin drawing with it you don't want to hold this pen at an angle you want to hold the pen upright from the angle that you see in the camera it doesn't look upright but it actually is it's just that i have the camera angled so that you can see the lines that i'm making with the pin so you want to hold the pin straight up the more vertical that you hold the pin the ink will flow to the tip of the pen a lot better and that will keep you from also damaging the tip of the pen as you can see the nib of this pen is fairly small and so you don't want to draw at an angle because that's going to damage the tip of the pen and you will have to buy a replacement and the replacements for these pins cost almo almost as much as buying a whole new pen so do be careful with that but when i'm drawing i always hold it upright like this and i make my lines that way now the way that my hand is holding the pen i'll show you here is i have it's not really a tripod and grip but it's similar to that so when i'm drawing with the pen i'm holding my fingers like that as you can see here i have my middle finger underneath the pen this finger here is just above the pen and i'm resting it on the yellow part of the pin here now as you can see here there's little grooves right here in the pen which helps you with gripping the pen and that is usually where i'll rest one of my fingers this finger while i'm drawing i rest in one of those grooves this middle finger here i have underneath the pen and then my thumb i will have either here or i will set my thumb over kind of on my finger so that when i'm drawing i can just draw straight up and down
or any angle you want to make your lines but i want to hold the pen upright so that i don't damage the nib of it and as you can see the way that i'm holding the pen right now um is i'll make it there we go in better view it's kind of hard to angle this because of the camera being angled but i have my hand like this
it's kind of like a tripod grip but it is slightly different this would be a tripod grip which you don't want to do i have my hands like this and the reason i had my hands this way is also so that i'm more relaxed and i'm not choking up my fingers at the tip of the pen and this will prevent me from holding onto the pen so hard so that i don't press too hard when i'm drawing i don't damage the nib on it so make sure you have a relaxing grip with the pin when you're drawing so you don't damage the nib of the pen now another tip that i would say when you're drawing with this is to not draw on rough paper make sure you're drawing on a smooth paper this here is just a paper i'm using as a demonstration as cheap printer paper but you want something that's very smooth the smoother the paper the better this pen is going to work on it because other papers they have a bit of tooth to them which will be good for drawing with a pencil or drawing with maybe pastels or crayons or anything else that needs a grip to it but you want smooth paper when you're drawing with this so i'll go ahead and give you a demonstration of me drawing
