On Monday, December 9, 2019, Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s newest performance venue—The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare—was filled to capacity with 600 high school students, friends, and family from communities across the city and the metro area, performing, cheering, dancing and geeking out—over Shakespeare. The Chicago Shakespeare Slam Final Bout marked the culmination of countless hours of rehearsal time, Saturday Team Workshops, and Regional Bouts for this third annual region-wide high school Shakespeare slam. Chicago Shakespeare Slam teams prepared for two rounds: first, the Scene Round—teams chose a scene from any of Shakespeare’s plays—and second, the Dream Round—teams created a reimagined, “remixed” performance piece using lines found in this year’s focus play, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. The finalist team from Fenton Community High School (Bensenville) chose a scene from JULIUS CAESAR for the Scene Round, and created a performance entitled “The Incredibly Abridged and Shredded Version of the Hilarious COMEDY OF ERRORS Plus an Encore to the Tune of ‘The William Tell Overture’: Or, as Our Coaches Say: ‘Do it Faster!’” for the Dream Round.
